Little joys of teaching! 😊

Today I had great fun teaching my first class on flow through porous media to Master’s students at Aix-Marseille University. We revisited one of the simplest and most powerful demonstrations in porous media science: measuring permeability using nothing more than beach sand from Marseille, a syringe, and gravity.

It’s remarkable how such a small tabletop experiment can reveal the foundations of Darcy’s law and spark curiosity about complex subsurface flows, filtration, and even biological transport.

Here’s to more hands-on science and the joy of learning by doing!
